Kara Gooch is the Teen Programs Operations Manager at Step Up. In this role, she is dedicated to overseeing the operations of teen-focused programs, enhancing the delivery of impactful experiences, and ensuring that each initiative aligns seamlessly with Step Up's mission to propel girls from under-resourced communities to fulfill their potential. Kara manages the logistics, collaborates with stakeholders, and monitors the effectiveness of programs to ensure they meet the organization's standards for empowerment and educational enrichment.

Kara's journey with Step Up began during her high school years at Gertz-Ressler High School (L.A.), where she first engaged with the organization as a teen participant. Her commitment and leadership potential were quickly recognized, leading to her becoming a Step Up Ambassador and later, a recipient of the prestigious Inspiration Award Scholarship. After completing her education, Kara continued to give back to the community that supported her, by mentoring young adults and moderating sessions alongside corporate partners. Her dedication was instrumental in facilitating donations and expanding Step Up’s presence to the Nashville market in 2022. Notably, Kara served as the opening speaker during the inaugural Nashville-based networking event, introducing the community to Step Up’s mission and services.

With a background as an Apprentice Experience Lead and a learning and development professional with one of Step Up's corporate partners, Kara has refined her skills in strategic planning, team collaboration, and adaptive leadership. She leverages these abilities to coach and uplift her team, ensuring Coordinators are empowered to be their best selves, thus fostering confidence that extends to the Fellows and Teens they serve.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Kara is deeply committed to bridging the gap in access to opportunities for non-degree holders, believing strongly in their potential to drive economic mobility through their competencies. As a wife and mother of three, she hopes to see Step Up expand to Austin, TX, where her children are eager to join and continue the legacy of empowerment and success that Step Up fosters.

What has your mentor taught you?

I don't credit the lessons I've learned to one mentor however my mentors have taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability in both my professional and personal life. One key lesson was the value of empathetic leadership—understanding the unique challenges and aspirations of each team member to better support their growth and success solidifies the culture of the teams I engage with and lead. This approach has not only enhanced my leadership skills but also deepened my commitment to fostering environments where young people can thrive.

What do you enjoy most about working at Step Up?

At Step Up, I deeply value our collaborative culture where everyone’s ideas are embraced, fostering an environment united by our mission to empower young women from under-resourced communities. This shared purpose not only makes every challenge worthwhile but also strengthens our collective resolve. From my first day, I have been guided by a commitment to Community Connection, Structured Support, and Inspired Spaces. These principles shape my approach to intentional leadership, ensuring that we consistently create environments that nurture potential and inspire growth. This is a mindset and a set of objectives I plan to uphold and evolve with for years to come.
