Lesson Overview

In this lesson, teens will increase their self-awareness by identifying their values and strengths through a writing exercise and self-visualization activity. Through these exercises participants will understand the power of self-acceptance, being intentional, and manifesting the best version of oneself. Mentors will participate and engage with teens through the activities.

Check In at School

  • School Fellow will review this week's learning objectives and take teen attendance.

Mentor Visit Introduction (2 min)

Step Up Mentors introduce themselves, their current company/role or career journey, and some words of advice they'd give to themselves if they were a teen. We encourage you to create a brief "Mentor Moment“and ask if there are any questions before the lesson.

I am a human being that + Self-Visualization Activities

Teens and mentors will read through each statement of the "I am a human being that..." activity and record their answers exploring the question "Who am I?"

I am a human being that -

  • Loves...
  • Wants to...
  • Has the goal of...
  • Used to be afraid of...
  • Is motivated by...
  • Is inspired by...
  • Has a habit of...
  • Is happiest when...
  • Gets disappointed by...
  • Would give...
  • Who notices...
  • Is skilled at...
  • Will one day...
  • Will be remembered by...
  • Aspires to be...
  • Believes in..

Through self-visualization participants will imagine their ideal life with the best possible outcomes - achieving all of the goals and accomplished all of the dreams.

What does your ideal life look like?

  • How do you spend your time?
  • Where do you live?
  • What are your hobbies and passions?
  • What social norms do you break?
  • How do you uplift your community?
  • How are you using creativity to make an impact?
  • How do liberate or help or influence others?
  • What kinds of problems do you solve?
  • What cause do you advocate?
  • What traits and characteristics do you embody?
  • What change do you help make in this world?

Everyone will write or draw and then debrief.

  • Describe how this activity might help you discover your direction.
  • How did represent your values, interests, and strengths in this activity?
  • Name reasons that visualizing your ideal life might benefit you in terms of exploring career opportunities.

The School Fellow will close out with announcements.
